Andrew Shiel-Redfern studied Graphic Design, Business and English Literature at QE before completing the College’s Art Foundation course and progressing to the University of Central Lancashire to complete a degree in International Hospitality Management. Looking back on his time at QE, he comments: ‘I thought the College was brilliant. The facilities on offer were very good and I loved having more freedom. I have fond memories of my time at QE’.

Andrew’s degree took him across the globe and saw him working in Bahrain, Dubai, London and other UK cities running bars and restaurants. He is now the General Manager of Hotel Du Vin in Newcastle and has worked there for the past 18 months. ‘What I love about the hospitality industry is that every day is different. It’s a high pressured environment but a very rewarding job. Our guests range from those on business to Premier League football players and celebrities’.

Andrew’s advice for current QE students is: ‘Enjoy your time at College. Work hard and also use your time to help you decide whether you want to go to university or move into full time employment. Take advantage of all of the advice and support provided.’ When asked about advice for students wishing to work in hospitality, Andrew adds: ‘If you like working with people and having a varied job then hospitality is a great industry. It can take you all over the world and you can work your way to the top of a company. There are also the opportunities to win awards both locally and nationally’.
